Animal Health Certificate

Travelling with your pet is great, but planning well in advance is essential to ensure the trip is stress free for you and your pet! Please note that when Hello Vet does this work we are acting as representatives of the government. We do not have any flexibility in the rules. For dogs and cats travelling to most European countries, you will need an animal health certificate issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV). Our practice has several OVs available to assist you with this.

How long is the AHC valid for?

The AHC is valid for 4 months for onward travel within the EU and allows return to Great Britain within that time period.

What are the requirements for the AHC?

● Pet needs to be microchipped (prior to/at the time of initial rabies vaccine). ● Have a valid rabies vaccine - then need to wait 21 days***** If already vaccinated, then check that they do not require a booster (you do not need to wait 21 days if there has been no break in vaccine cover. ● Animal health certificates need to be issued by an OV (official vet) within 10 days of your travel date (specifically your date of entry into a european country) ● If you are travelling to Finland, Ireland, Malta, Northern Ireland or Norway your dog needs to be treated for tapeworm no less than 24hrs and no more than 120 hours before you arrive and recorded in your AHC. ● The AHC's are dual language - printed in English and the language of the country through which your pet enters the EU (this may differ from your final destination country) ● A declaration needs to be signed by the pet owner or person acting on behalf of the owner that they are travelling for non- commercial purposes. This means that the owner has to travel with the pet OR within 5 days of their pet if travelling separately. ● Upon your return you must visit a vet in the EU for a tapeworm treatment to be given 24-120 hrs before you come back into the UK.

When do I need to get an animal health certificate?

You must obtain an animal health certificate within 10 days before entering the EU, provided your pet has an up-to-date rabies vaccination. If your pet needs a rabies vaccination, you must wait 21 days from the vaccination date before obtaining the certificate, with Day 1 counted as the day after vaccination.

Can I have more than one animal put on the same certificate?

Up to 5 animals can be placed on 1 certificate.

Am I able to get to an Animal Health Certificate despite having had my rabies vaccine elsewhere?

If your pet has a valid rabies vaccination given at a different vet clinic we are able to issue an AHC, however we will need to see your pet to check the microchip, and also receive a copy of the medical records directly from the clinic where the rabies vaccination was given.
